أكدت الحكومة الكندية أن أربعة من مواطنيها تم تنفيذ حكم الإعدام بحقهم في الصين في وقت سابق من هذا العام بتهم متعلقة بالمخدرات. قد أدانت أوتاوا بشدة عمليات الإعدام، معتبرة أنها لا رجعة فيها وتتنافى مع كرامة الإنسان. ودافعت بكين عن إجراءاتها، مشيرة إلى أن الأفراد حُكم عليهم بجرائم مخدرات ومؤكدة على أن الصين لا تعترف بالجنسية المزدوجة. تأتي هذه الكشفات في ظل تصاعد التوترات بين كندا والصين، مع النزاعات التجارية الأخيرة حول الرسوم الجمركية على السيارات الكهربائية والمنتجات الزراعية التي تزيد من توتر العلاقات. لم يتم الكشف عن هويات الأفراد المُعدمين بناءً على طلب عائلاتهم.
